EMC Regulations and the Integration with Industrial Ethernet Equipment
It may need a tremendous amount of network devices to build a complete video surveillance system, together with the complicated cabling networks that connecting all the equipment. This may cause the complexity of electromagnetic interference and affect the total performance of the system. Therefore, electromagnetic compatibility of the electronic equipment should not be negligible when the video surveillance system is applied to environments with high-voltage current, such as power plant, factory, transportation and infrastructure.
EMC stands for electromagnetic compatibility. This means electromagnetic energy generated by the equipment is neither interfering to other equipment nor accept the electromagnetic energy interference of other equipment. EMC includes two aspects: One is electromagnetic interference (EMI). It refers to the equipment in normal operation process towards the environment in which the electromagnetic interference cannot exceed a certain limit; another is electromagnetic sensitivity (EMS). It refers to the equipment in environments where electromagnetic interference immunity.
Designed in compliance of high EMC standard is also a key index of quality and performance of an excellent network product. In the meantime, EMC design of the components and PCBA are also needed to be taken into consideration. Taking substations for example, when the high-voltage convertor, circuit breaker and relays are operating, they will step up the voltage to several hundred thousand volts, which may generate huge electromagnetic interference to the equipment in the substation, and cause unpredictable damages.
Transportation systems such as train and subway are operated by electric power. The electromagnetic interference can be sorted by environments outside the cabin, the electronic equipment in the cabin, the main transformer substation and the backup transformer substations along the rail and other electrical substations. The main electrical system provides the power for the cars to operate on. The auxiliary power system processes the electrical power and distribute to electronic equipment on the cars. Due to the fact that the on board units on the trains have higher voltage input, besides resisting the EMI of other equipment, it is also crucial to sustain the huge electromagnetic radiation generated by the train itself. When communication equipment is installed to such a complicated environment, the test of the electronic equipment will become more severe.
■ 5 Key Considerations in Designing EMC Products:
1. Selection of components
In high EMI environment like substation or railway system, heat and electromagnetic interference are two crucial factors to cause failure of communication products. The excessive heat coming from the electronic components in enclosed environment will increase the temperature inside the cabinet. Also the electromagnetic interference will result in communication noise or even signal loss. EtherWAN selects parts from active to passive components (resistor and capacitor) with high MTBF and wide temperature endurance range to ensure the products working normally in high temperature environment.
2. Professional Circuit Design
Aiming at special EMS environment such as power plants and railways, the design of the circuit and PCBA board focus on resistance of surge current; therefore, rich experience in designing safe spacing and the circuit is necessary.
3. Test Levels and Strict Manufacturing Standards of Industrial Grade and Commercial Grade products
EtherWAN insists that in the stage of design verification, regardless of commercial grade or industrial grade, all the products will be tested in the environmental simulation laboratory for temperature and EMC tests. Before the shipment, the product will go through a long period burn-in test, to ensure the product can work under high workload environment.
4. Third Party Test Reports
EtherWAN's products have passed and obtain multiple third party certifications according to different requirements in different markets:
EN61000-6-2/EN61000-6-4: Immunity requirements for electrical and electronic apparatus used in industrial environments.
EN55022/EN55024: European limits and methods of measurement of radio disturbance characteristics of information technology equipment.
IEC61850-3/IEEE1613: For power substations.
EN50121-4: Railway applications - Electromagnetic compatibility - Part 4 : emission and immunity of the signaling and telecommunications apparatus.
EN50155: Railway applications - Electronic equipment used on rolling stock.
NEMA TS2: Environmental requirements for Traffic control equipment.
5. Highly Flexible Product Selection and Excellent After Service
EtherWAN’s Ethernet switches can provide highly flexible port number combinations, according to different transmission speed and transmission interface to fulfill different requirements. EtherWAN offers 5 year
guarantee on its products, with complete pre-sale technical consulting and after service.
EtherWAN specializes in designing and manufacturing industrial grade Ethernet products. Taking The EX83000 and the EX87000 industrial grade managed hardened Ethernet switches for example, the EX87000 has passed the KEMA test, complied with IEC61850-3/IEEE1613 standards for substations with remarkable Electromagnetic Susceptibility (EMS), which is suitable for power automation, power transmission and distribution, power grid integration markets. The EX83000 has passed EN50121-4 certificate for railway applications, complying with the regulations of electromagnetic interference and sustainability in railway environment.
EtherWAN specially designed the new generation EX78900 hardened managed Ethernet switch, which possesses Electro-Static protection, fan-less non-ventilated design and passed shock, impact and high and low temperature environment test. Each of the 8 Ultra PoE ports on EX78900 can supply 60 watt of power and the total output reaches 240 watt, which is suitable for high power devices such as PTZ camera and Thin Client computer.
All of the EtherWAN's hardened grade Ethernet products comply with the endurance conditions to normally work between -40~75℃ (-40~167℉). EtherWAN Alpha-Ring self-healing technology, providing less than 15ms fault recovery time making it ideal for applications intolerant to interruption.
