Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology has steadily increased in popularity since its introduction, and its adoption is becoming more widespread. However, one of the drawbacks of PoE is distance. The maximum effective length for UTP cable is 100 meters (328 feet).

Fiber optic cabling, used in conjunction with PoE-enabled media converters, can overcome the distance limitations of copper cable, but there still exist many applications where it is not practical or economically feasible to use fiber.

Instead of installing a new cable infrastructure, Ethernet extenders allow the existing coaxial cabling to be used for data transmission.

One of the drawbacks of traditional PoE is transmission distance, because the maximum effective length for standard Ethernet cabling is 100 meters (328 feet). A PoE Ethernet Extender utilizes Power over Link (PoL) technology to deliver both PoE power and Ethernet communications over a single legacy twisted pair cable, such as a telephone line.

EtherWAN’s PoE Extenders break the 100-meter distance limitation of standard Power over Ethernet. With these PoE Extenders, PoE devices can be deployed up to 670 meters (2200 feet) away (distance will depend on power level needed) using standard copper twisted-pair cabling. 

Generally speaking, Wi-Fi is more convenient, but Ethernet offers a more stable connection. While Ethernet delivers better speed, lower latency, and more reliability. Wi-Fi is much more convenient to install and set up.
