Cities That Value Digital Innovation Are Increasingly Turning to EtherWAN

Background

The 843 square mile County of Douglas, Colorado is a leader in digital innovation and has won awards that underscore its commitment to citizens through technology. In 2018, the county beat over 3,000 counties to earn the County Government-to-Citizen Experience Award from the Center for Digital Government.

Douglas County's mission statement is, “Quality of life is the most important outcome of our work. The decisions we make have to pass one simple test: will it make Douglas County a better place?”  This mission has led them to rank in the top 10% of the most technologically innovative counties in the nation for initiatives that save tax dollars, boost transparency, cybersecurity and civic engagement.

Solution

With this commitment to improving the lives of their citizens, Douglas County discovered EtherWAN Systems. The large county requires a significant technological infrastructure to work quietly and efficiently in the background. When the county had the need to upgrade the hardened switches on their traffic network, they knew that they needed a dependable partner with rock-solid products. The relentless pace of bandwidth usage meant they needed to evolve to deploying fiber with I.P. addressable devices.

Due to the County's potential weather extremes, (record lows of -38 degrees to record highs of 101 degrees Fahrenheit) it was critical that a hardened solution was put in place.  At an engineering conference, the county's technology team encountered EtherWAN Systems and began to ask them about the features, capabilities and support.  The County technical team liked what they heard and decided to set up a proof of concept (POC) using EtherWAN's modular hardened switch series,EX89000 series.  The POC went extremely well and soon, the County began integrating EtherWAN products throughout their network.  This was almost eight years ago, and the county is happy to report that the hardened EtherWAN products are still going strong.

Summary

“We're very happy with EtherWAN, the EX89000 series, and their support.  It's been a very nice solution for our needs,” said Donald Fritz Moore, Signal Electronics Specialist for the County. “The products fit easily in our traffic cabinets, and EtherWAN provides a smooth upgrade path as our network moves towards full Gigabit speeds across our entire network,” adds Moore.

As Douglas County leads the way in riding the technology wave, EtherWAN plans on providing full support every step of the way.
