Step-by-step setup for OttoE PoE Watchdog

When a camera, sensor, or access point stops responding, the OttoE PoE switch’s built-in Watchdog checks for traffic from the powered device (PD). If none is detected, it power-cycles the PoE port to reboot the device and reduce on-site maintenance remotely.

Before You Start

  • Device startup time:
Confirm how long the powered device (PD—e.g., camera, sensor, wireless AP) takes to boot from power-off to fully operational (typically 2–8 minutes).

  • Power & cabling:
Verify the switch’s PoE budget is sufficient. Use Cat5e or better cabling; run length ≤ 100 m.

DIP Mapping & Settings

  • DIP #1–#8: Each DIP switch controls Watchdog auto-recovery for the corresponding PoE port (Ports 1–8); ON = enable, OFF = disable.
  • DIP #9 (EXT): Sets the startup delay to avoid cold-start false positives (OFF = 10 minutes / ON = 5 minutes).

Important: Any time you change any DIP, you must reboot the switch for the setting to take effect.

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Set the delay first: Set DIP #9 to OFF = 10 min (safer to cover device cold-start time). Once you confirm the device stabilizes within 5 minutes, change it to 5 minutes.
  2. Select the ports to protect: Enable only the ports that need auto-recovery by setting the corresponding DIP #1–#8 to ON.
  3. Reboot the switch: Reboot to apply the settings. A brief network interruption is expected.
  4. Wait for the delay to finish: Wait 10 or 5 minutes as set by DIP #9. Watchdog starts monitoring after the delay.

3-Minute Quick Field Check

  1. Select a port with Watchdog enabled and proceed pause traffic test.
  2. Confirm the port power-cycles and the device recovers.

Glossary (Quick Reference)

  • PD: Powered Device—e.g., camera, sensor, wireless AP.
  • Watchdog: Monitors each port for traffic; if a 30-second check detects no traffic, the port is power-cycled.
  • Power cycle: Temporarily turns PoE off for the port, then back on to reboot an unresponsive device.
  • PoE budget: The switch’s total available PoE power; multiple high-power devices powering up simultaneously can exceed the budget.
